Different Levels of Dental Sedation

Sedation Dentistry in Chandler Arizona
There are different levels of sedation used in dentistry. They vary by the techniques used and are chosen for the level of sedation needed. Some patients require more sedation than others. Some procedures require more sedation than others. We will design a sedation plan for your specific needs.

Light Sedation - Usually nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or a single oral medication such as valium or xanax. This creates a minimal level of sedation and often works well for a patient who is only slightly nervous and needs minimal treatment such as a few simple dental fillings. With nitrous oxide, the effects are quickly reversible and the patient can drive themselves to and from their dental appointment. With the single oral medication, the patients needs to be driven to and from the dental office. All dentists with the right equipment can provide this level of sedation.
Moderate to Deep Conscious Sedation (sometimes called twilight sleep) - This usually involves a combination of medications taken by mouth and nitrous oxide. The level of sedation is slowly increased until the desired effect is achieved. This works well for the extremely nervous patient and/or the patient who requires a lot of major dental treatment. The patient is carefully monitored for the level of sedation. They are extremely relaxed, but still conscious enough to respond to verbal commands. They rarely have any memory of the dental treatment. It can be reversed if the patient becomes too sedated, but the patient requires a driver to bring them to and from their dental appointment. By law, dentists require special training and a special permit from the State of Arizona to provide this level of sedation.
IV Sedation and General Anesthesia - This is as much deeper level of sedation where the patient is usually completely unconscious. In dentistry this is often used for major procedures such as removal of impacted wisdom teeth or major jaw surgery. It requires more speciality training and state permits. Because the patient is taken to totally unconscious levels, there is greater risk. Because of this, it is usually preformed by anesthesiologists. This significantly increases costs.
